Ancient Olympia city ,a modern Map of Olympia.

Olympia is most famous as the site of the ancient Olympic games, dating as far back as 776 BC.  The games were abolished in 394 by the emperor Theodosius I because of their paganistic semblance.  In the 2004 Olympics, Greece used the ancient site as one of the venues.

It is located in the Peloponnese peninsula, in the region of Eleia.

Because of its historical significance, the town is famous as a tourist destination.  Cruise ships and ferries dock at the nearby port at Katakolo and take the buses or other form of transportation into the town itself.  It can be also reached by land from Athens, about a 5-hour drive.  Our Olympia map can help you find your way into and out of the town so make sure to refer to it anytime you visit this place of such glorious past.

There are numerous hotels and camping sites in the area, many near the main tourist sites.  Find the closest ones you like for accommodation using our map of Olympia as guide.

Restaurants, shops and some bars also line the area, mostly for the tourists who frequently come through.  Tours are most ideal in Olympia so you can get historical retellings for each place you visit.  If you wish to traverse it yourself, however, our Olympia map can serve as a useful guide as you make your way through its numerous sites of interest.  Most notable of these include:

• the Altis, the sacred area of Zeus
• the 5th century Temple of Zeus, which once housed the statue of Phideas
• the Olympic stadium
• the Temple of Here, where the Olympic torch is lit
• the museum which contains many of the artifacts from the surrounding vicinity
• the Temple at Bassae, a well-preserved temple built in 420 BC

While the ruins are mostly gone, the rich history of the place will never leave and will fascinate travelers in a way few places will ever do.
